I. Title of Program or Issue
Marketing the Community

Relates to the following Strategic Plan Product:
a) Community Development Process: Strategic Planning for Community Development
b) Economic Development: Retention and Expansion of Business
c) Economic Development: Business/Industrial Attraction

A. Situation Statement: 
Communities must continually work at strengthening their economic well-being.  A traditional method employed is the marketing of the community to existing businesses and potential new businesses.  Today's communities must, like their counterparts in the private sector, adopt new concepts of what marketing a community truly encompasses. 

B. Description/Educational Objectives:
This program is intended to assist local leaders and influential persons evaluate the basic tenets of a strong community marketing program.  Within this seminar, participants will consider a preparedness approach to marketing,  This approach encourages communities to consider the needs of business as the base for their marketing plan and to develop an appropriate community image. 

C. Suggested Time Required for Program: 
Three to four hours, depending on the level of class participation desired.

Suggested Time of Year: Any time of the year. 

D. Audience and Level of Offering: 
This program is designed to be a small group presentation (10-25 persons).  Various levels of understanding within the group are encouraged since each person's experience can be shared to strengthen the learning experience. 

E. Teaching Methods, Resources, Costs: Overheads, videos and lecture are used to stimulate group discussion and involvement.  Lengthening the program to four hours allows for class participation exercises related to the participants' community. 
Cost: Travel expenses of instructor, relevant material reproduction.
